Jacque D. Young, O.D.
As a child, Dr. Jacque Young spent many hours after school analyzing the "Model of Vision" poster hanging in her father's optometric reception area. It showed "elf-like" creatures controlling different parts of our visual system. It was most intriguing, as she never felt any elves roaming around in her brain. She concluded that perhaps there was more to this story of vision than the poster portrayed.
Through her middle and high school years, she learned the various responsibilities in her father's optometric office, helping at the front desk, in pre-testing, and in the dispensing areas. Helping kids see leaves on trees with new glasses was quite rewarding. Seeing people lose their vision was sad and she learned it was often preventable. The message she received was that maintaining and preserving vision was very important to people's lives.
Dr. JacqueYoung graduated as a top student from Glenwood High School, with the infamous "Class of 76". She completed 3 years of pre-medical studies at the University of Iowa and was accepted into the Illinois College of Optometry in 1979.
Her years in Chicago included involvement in student government. She was the first woman in the history of the college to be elected as the Student Government President. She was very involved in VOSH-Voluntary Optometric Service to Humanity, spending time at Indian reservations in Minnesota and also in Mexico providing eye care to those in need. Her special interests in Chicago included children's vision, low vision and eye disease.
Graduating in 1983, summa cum laude (with high honors), she returned to Glenwood to begin practice with her father, Dr. Elwood (Jack) Young. Dr. Jacque Young and her father worked together until 1990, when he retired after 40 years of optometric service in the community. Her mother, Bonnie, was a vital part of the practice through the years. In 1993, the office tripled in space by moving to its current location.
Dr. Jacque Young's interest in providing care to all ages has continued through the years, from infants to older patients with serious eye disease. Since the late 1980's free vision screenings have been provided to over 2000 preschool and kindergarten children with the assistance of the Kiwanis Club. In the late 1980's, Dr. John Liu began providing surgical and laser consultations to Dr. Jacque Young's patients at her office location on a monthly basis. Young Vision Care was one of the first optometric offices in the nation to offer local ophthalmological care to patients.
Keeping up to date with the latest information and technology has been a high priority of Dr. Jacque Young's over the years. Having a well trained staff who value patient satisfaction is another priority of hers.
Dr. Jacque Young's husband, Howard Kamish, has his own business in electronics. She has two adult daughters, Jessica and Whitney.
Dr. Jacque Young is the President of the Kiwanis Club of Glenwood and a board member for the Glenwood Area Dollars for Scholars. Previously Dr. Young has received the Chamber's citizen of the year award and was named the Grand Marshall for the Homecoming Parade. Dr. Jacque Young enjoys golf, tennis, and tolerates working out at the local Y.M.C.A.
